(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Jae Heon Lee – Doosan Enerbility Co., a leading South Korean power equipment manufacturer, announced on the 21st that it has received the IR52 Jang Young Sil Award for its independently developed nuclear fission Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM) nozzle.

The IR52 Jang Young Sil Award recognizes research organizations that demonstrate outstanding achievements in technological innovation. The CEDM nozzle is a critical component attached to the reactor head, enabling precise and safe movement of control rods that regulate nuclear fission. Previously, this part was exclusively produced by a handful of overseas companies, forcing South Korea’s nuclear power industry to rely entirely on imports.

Doosan Enerbility, led by principal researcher Kim Young Deuk of the Materials Technology Development Team, achieved localization of the CEDM nozzle after 45 months of close collaboration between its research and business divisions. The company maintained quality standards equivalent to foreign competitors, while reducing costs by 20% and delivery times by half.

Leveraging this competitive edge, Doosan Enerbility has secured orders totaling approximately 61 billion won ($46 million) to date, including replacement projects in 2022 and new projects in 2023.

Song Yong Jin, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at Doosan Enerbility, stated, “We plan to share this core technology with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises to strengthen the industrial ecosystem, and to expand its application to areas such as small modular reactors (SMRs).”
