(New York=Yonhap Infomax) Jin Woo Choi—The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced on the 21st (local time) that it has canceled the release of the October Consumer Price Index (CPI). The November CPI is scheduled to be published on December 18.
This means that members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which will convene on December 9–10, will have to decide on policy rates without access to the latest CPI data. The monthly employment report is also slated for release after the FOMC, on December 16.
The BLS explained, "We were unable to collect survey data for the October CPI because the government budget was not approved." The agency added, "For some indices, calculations are based on alternative data sources, and for most of these nonsurvey data sources, we expect to obtain the October figures retroactively."
The BLS further stated, "Where possible, we will publish October values alongside the November CPI release," and clarified, "For indicators lacking October data, we will not provide month-on-month changes for November."
