HD Hyundai Secures Order for Eight Ultra-Large Container Ships from HMM—Deal Valued at 2.1 Trillion Won

(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Jong Hwa Han — HD Hyundai Group has secured an order for eight ultra-large container vessels from HMM Co., South Korea’s largest shipping line by fleet capacity, marking the largest single container ship order since the 2007 shipping supercycle.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., the intermediate shipbuilding holding company of HD Hyundai, announced on the 24th that it has signed a contract with HMM to build eight 13,400 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) dual-fuel container ships.

The total contract value is 2.13 trillion won ($1.6 billion).

The newly ordered vessels will each measure 337 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 27.9 meters in height. They will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and feature large fuel tanks with approximately 50% greater capacity, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing emissions.

Of the eight ships, two will be constructed at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., and six at HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. Deliveries are scheduled to begin sequentially through the first half of 2029.

With this latest contract, HD Hyundai has secured orders for a total of 69 container ships this year, representing a combined capacity of 720,000 TEU. This is the largest annual container ship order volume since 2007, when global shipping demand peaked at 793,473 TEU during the previous economic boom.

An HD Hyundai official stated, “We are further solidifying our position in the global market based on differentiated technology and customer trust. We will continue to lead the decarbonization of the shipbuilding and shipping industries through our focus on eco-friendly, high-efficiency vessels.”
