(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Jae Heon Lee – LS Cable & System announced on the 24th that it has commenced construction on Korea Electric Power Corp.’s (KEPCO) “East Coast–Shin Gapyeong” transmission network project, deploying the world’s first commercialized 500kV (kilovolt), 90°C (high-temperature) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. This marks the launch of South Korea’s largest HVDC project and the world’s highest-capacity HVDC system to date.

The East Coast–Shin Gapyeong section is the first phase of the “East Coast–Seoul Metropolitan Area” project, designed to transmit power generated on the East Coast to the Seoul metropolitan region. The project is regarded as a critical infrastructure initiative to enhance national power supply stability.

The cables used in this project are high-specification products that increase the conductor’s permissible temperature compared to conventional 70°C cables, boosting transmission capacity by up to 50%. LS Cable & System’s technology was officially recognized after passing KEPCO’s pre-qualification (PQ) review in June.

LS Cable & System is the only company in South Korea with experience in both submarine and underground HVDC projects, having supplied all domestic HVDC cable projects, including Jeju–Jindo, Jeju–Wando, and Bukdangjin–Godeok. The company will be the sole supplier for the entire section of this latest project as well.

LS Cable & System stated it will actively expand its participation in major domestic and international projects, including the West Coast HVDC Energy Expressway, the second phase of the East Coast–Seoul Metropolitan Area project, and the European TenneT project.
