(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Jae Heon Lee – Hyundai Steel Co. announced on the 24th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) and the Korea Electric Industry Cooperative Association to ensure the timely construction of the national power grid.
This agreement is aimed at responding to the government's plan to expand the national power grid, which is expected to require approximately 700,000 tons of new transmission towers by 2038. Hyundai Steel will work with KEPCO to ensure the stable production and supply of industrial steel required for transmission tower manufacturing, establish a system for sharing information on future energy demand-based grid construction plans, and cooperate on the development of next-generation transmission towers to support large-scale grid expansion.
A system has now been established to supply core raw materials for the national power grid project—such as angle steel for towers—in a timely manner. Angle steel, characterized by its 'L'-shaped cross-section, is widely used as a reinforcement material in steel structures, including tower components, ship hulls, and trusses.
Despite a challenging business environment marked by sluggish domestic and overseas demand and rising costs, Hyundai Steel emphasized its commitment to strengthening its role as a supplier of key raw materials for South Korea's critical infrastructure. The company also stated its intention to develop high-value-added steel for next-generation transmission towers and to enhance its supply capabilities in line with mid- to long-term domestic grid investment plans, positioning itself as a leading steel partner supporting grid modernization and the energy transition.
