(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Jong Hwa Han = The Canadian Minister of Industry visited HD Hyundai Co. to discuss avenues for economic and industrial cooperation.
HD Hyundai announced that Melanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Industry, visited the company's Global R&D Center (GRC) in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, on the 25th.
Minister Joly, accompanied by HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Cho Seok, toured the Digital Convergence Center, where she observed the company's technological capabilities firsthand, including artificial intelligence (AI)-based naval solutions, hybrid electric propulsion vessels, and digital twin virtual sea trials.
She also visited the Digital Control Center to review the operational status of HD Hyundai-built vessels currently in service worldwide.
Vice Chairman Cho Seok stated, "HD Hyundai is the world's leading shipbuilder, possessing top-tier naval shipbuilding technology and production capacity," adding, "We will seek cooperation with Canada not only in the naval sector but also across various industries such as shipbuilding, energy, robotics, and AI."
The K-Shipbuilding 'One Team', comprising Hanwha Ocean, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, was shortlisted in August for the Canadian Navy's submarine procurement project.
With a project value of up to 60 trillion won ($45.4 billion), the initiative aims to introduce twelve 3,000-ton class submarines to the Canadian Navy. Minister Joly holds significant decision-making authority over this major project.
On the 24th, Minister Joly also visited Hanwha Ocean's Geoje facility to inspect the recently launched Jang Young-sil submarine and other 'Jangbogo-III Batch-II' class submarines.
