(Seoul=Yonhap Infomax) Kyung Pyo Hong – Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), the world’s largest e-commerce company, announced plans to invest up to $50 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) and supercomputing infrastructure for US government clients.
On the 24th (local time), Amazon said it will expand AI and supercomputing capabilities for US government customers through its cloud unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), with a maximum investment of $50 billion.
The company will build data centers equipped with advanced computing and networking technologies, adding 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity. For context, 1 GW is equivalent to the output of a nuclear power plant and can supply electricity to approximately one million households simultaneously.
Amazon explained that this investment will accelerate decision-making processes for US government agencies. By integrating simulation and modeling data with AI, agencies will be able to conduct autonomous experiments and receive real-time feedback, reducing tasks that previously took weeks or months to just a few hours.
The company emphasized that the initiative will drive innovation across critical US government and industrial missions, ranging from national security to scientific research.
AWS, the world’s largest cloud services provider, delivers services to US government agencies through dedicated facilities that meet strict security standards, including data handling, separation from commercial projects, and employee nationality requirements.
In addition to Amazon’s proprietary AI, AWS plans to offer government agencies access to AI tools from its partner Anthropic, as well as NVIDIA and in-house developed chips.
